MSP calls for rendition inquiry Print E-mail

Nationalist MSP Jamie Hepburn has called for the new Cabinet Secretary for Justice Kenny MacAskill to launch an inquiry into allegations that Scottish airports have been used and may still be used for ‘extraordinary rendition’ flights.

Rendition refers to a controversial programme where terror suspects are abducted and transported to US facilities like Guantanamo Bay or Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, or to US friendly countries where campaigners say they face torture.

In opposition the SNP attacked the Labour/Lib Executive’s failure to formally launch investigations into claims that Scottish airports like Prestwick were being used as staging points for the flights.

Hepburn said: “The mere suggestion that the process we now commonly know as extraordinary rendition has been facilitated through Scotland turns my blood cold. The allegations that such has happened have been around for a while now, but the previous administration resolutely stuck its head in the sand and refused to face up to the issue.

“Now we have had a break from that style of government I am confident that we can have a full and proper inquiry into the allegations. We have to find out whether there is any substance to them and if so, act accordingly. I believe an inquiry is the correct way forward in this matter.”
