Members of the public are to be given the chance to win pairs of tickets to see the Queen address MSPs in the Scottish Parliament for the first time in the new session, as part of a nationwide draw opening today.
Eight members of the public will be chosen at random from the eight
parliamentary regions across the country. The winners, plus guests,
will receive formal invitations to attend the ceremony, as well as free
travel to Edinburgh, on Saturday 30 June.
Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson said: "We are delighted to open our
doors to people from across the country to take part in an event which
will be a celebration of today's Scotland - defined as much by its rich
heritage as its modern achievements.
"Once again, by putting the people at the heart of Parliament, we are
sure that this will be a day for all of Scotland to enjoy."
The Queen’s address will be followed by a Riding, marking the old Scots
tradition where members of the public and the newly elected members
come together.
The Riding, which will run through the Old Town, down and Royal Mile
and into the landscaped gardens of the Parliament, will feature 1,200
people, including ‘local heroes’ nominated by newly elected MSPs,
highlighting achievements in the fields of education, enterprise,
science and nature, society, sport and culture, and international.
The day will culminate in a free open air concert in the Parliament’s
gardens, which will include live music, drama, dance, as well as an
opportunity to tour the public areas of the Parliament building.
To apply for tickets send your name, date of birth, full address and
postcode, previous addresses for the past five years and daytime
contact telephone number to: Session Three Ceremony, Visitor Services,
The Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh EH99 1SP.
Applications much be received by no later than 12 noon, Friday 1 June.
Successful applicants will be notified by Monday 11 June, at which
point they will be given further instructions on the arrangements for
the event.
