McConnell announces front bench team Print E-mail

Labour leader Jack McConnell has announced his front bench team, which will shadow the SNP’s new-look Scottish Executive.

McConnell has chosen Wendy Alexander to shadow John Swinney in the new position of Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, a department that McConnell referred to yesterday as “a shambles of a department” during the vote on the SNP's ministerial team.

Alexander will have Des McNulty, former Deputy Communities Minister, and Iain Gray as deputies, who will shadow Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change Stewart Stevenson and Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism Jim Mather respectively.

Hugh Henry, the Education Minister in the last Executive, will assume the equivalent role in opposition, as the shadow for Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop.

He will be assisted by Pauline McNeill, who will shadow Adam Ingram’s role as Minister for Children and Early Years, and Ken Macintosh, who will shadow Schools and Skills Minister Maureen Watt.

Andy Kerr, the Health Minister in the last Executive, will shadow the new Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Nicola Sturgeon. Kerr will be assisted by Lewis McDonald, his Deputy Health Minister in the last Executive, who will shadow Minister for Public Health Shona Robison. Johann Lamont, former Deputy Justice Minister, will shadow Stewart Maxwell as Minister for Communities and Sport

Rhona Brankin, the former Communities Minister, will shadow the SNP’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, Richard Lochhead, and Sarah Boyack will shadow Minister for Environment Michael Russell.

Margaret Curran will shadow Kenny MacAskill, the Cabinet Secretary for Justice, assisted by Paul Martin, who is brought into the front bench team to shadow Minister for Community Safety Fergus Ewing.

Patricia Ferguson, the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport until the election, will shadow Linda Fabiani, who is Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture.

Cathy Jamieson will be the Shadow Minister for Parliamentary Business, shadowing Bruce Crawford, with Michael McMahon as her deputy and Labour chief whip. The other party whips will be Karen Gillon and David Stewart.

Former Finance Minister Tom McCabe will be Labour's nomination for the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body, and Richard Baker will act as Parliamentary Private Secretary to McConnell.
