SNP and Lib Dems join forces in Fife coalition Print E-mail

Scottish Labour has lost control of Fife Council after the SNP and Lib Dems announced the latest local coalition deal.

The joint administration holds 44 of the 78 seats on Fife Council, which ends years of Labour domination. Fife is also the region where Chancellor Gordon Brown has his constituency.

The agreement will be ratified at a meeting of the full council today and is the latest in a series of deals in local government since the May elections.

Aberdeen City has already announced an SNP and Lib Dem coalition. Councillors have voted to install 18-year-old Councillor John West in the new role of Depute Provost.

The new administration of Perth and Kinross Council will also be a partnership between the SNP and Liberal Democrats. The leader of the council will be the SNP's Ian Miller and the Provost and convener of the council is fellow SNP councillor John Hulbert.

A Conservative, Lib Dem and independent coalition is set to be confirmed for Scottish Borders Council.

Coalition deals have been announced for many Councils across Scotland after the new PR-STV voting system resulted in most local authorities having no overall control.
