The National Farmers Union in Scotland (NFUS) is urging rural road users to take extra care, especially around slow-moving farm vehicles.
The warning comes after the release of figures showing that 70 per cent of all road deaths take place on rural roads.
Recognising that motorists can often become frustrated when caught
behind farm vehicles or machinery, the NFUS has released bumper
stickers farmers can attach to their vehicles apologising for delays.
The stickers read: “SORRY FOR THE DELAY. Farmgate to dinner plate – good food comes to those who wait.”
NFUS spokesperson Anna Davies said:
“We are keen to do all we can to help prevent some of these needless
rural deaths. By helping to allay some of the frustration caused by
slow-moving vehicles we may be able to prevents some of the accidents.
“The farming industry has a very important job to do in providing food
for 57 million people and taking care of Scotland’s world famous
countryside. Sometimes, this job requires farm vehicles to travel on
the road and these vehicles can, at times, cause delays.”
