New housing group chairman warns of crisis Print E-mail

The incoming chairman of housing industry group Homes for Scotland has called on the new Scottish Executive to embrace the private sector in tackling what he describes as Scotland’s “housing crisis”.

Homes for Scotland’s member organisations provide more than 90 per cent of the new homes built in Scotland each year.

Ronnie Jacobs, regional chairman of Miller Homes, said that Scotland’s housing challenge was twofold, and that the private sector must be allowed to play a role in meeting it:

“Scotland is on the verge of a housing crisis. We are simply not providing enough new homes to meet the country’s real needs - that is, to meet latent demand, to house immigrants and to replace aging housing stock. The Scottish Executive has failed to recognise the part that the private sector can play in addressing Scotland’s housing problems and I am determined to ensure that housing is a real focus of attention for the new Administration.”
