Tory MSP scores Presiding Officer job Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 May 2007

Conservative MSP Alex Fergusson has been confirmed as the new Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament.

Labour MSP Trish Godman, who has been Deputy Presiding Officer previously, will resume the role, and she will be joined by Alasdair Morgan of the Scottish National Party.

Fergusson, MSP for Galloway and Upper Nithsdale, won by 108 votes to Independent MSP Margo MacDonald's 20.

He said that, like his predecessors, he would "reluctantly" suspend his party allegiance for as long as he serves in the role.

"Let us all remember that our electorate, the people of Scotland, want this new politics to work for them and we have a duty to deliver what the electorate expects."

Former Presiding Officer George Reid praised Fergusson, saying: "He brings real qualities to that task, a farmer rooted in his native soil, experienced in shepherding his flock in all weathers."

"You have just elected a decent and honourable man to head this house."
