Labour MSPs: Contest not coronation Print E-mail

Over 100 hundred party members from across Scotland have written to Scottish Labour MPs to ask them to ensure that party members have the right to choose the next leader of the party.

Labour MSP Elaine Smith, convener of the Campaign for Socialism, announcing the letter, said that this could only be achieved if Gordon Brown faces a challenger rather than receiving a coronation.

She said that it was inconceivable in the face of declining membership and the recent election results in England, Wales and especially Scotland that anyone could believe that the Labour party can go forward to win another term in office “without profound scrutiny of its policy and practice”.

“A contest for the leadership should not be seen as a threat but an opportunity to debate the best way forward to achieve our shared goals of equality, social justice and international peace.”

The text of the letter, which was also signed by MSP Marlyn Glen, says: “We as members of the Labour Party call on Labour Members of Parliament to ensure there is the widest choice available to party members in the election for Leader of the Party. We feel that in order to uphold the tradition of democracy within the Labour Party more than one candidate should be nominated and every member of the Party should have a vote on the issue.

“We therefore urge our Scottish MPs to initiate and support action to have an election for Leader of the Party.”
