Goldie urged to take PO role Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 May 2007

Former Tory MSP Brian Monteith has called on Tory leader Annabel Goldie to accept the role of Presiding Officer at Holyrood and clear the way for a new leader for the party in Scotland.

Writing on Tory website Conservative Home, Monteith – who was forced out of the Conservative Party after he was found to be briefing the press against then leader David McLetchie – said that the plaudits she had gained from leading the party’s election campaign would allow her to bow out gracefully.

However, he attacked claims that the Tories had performed well in the elections, saying that this “beggared belief”.

“If the Tories were in power in Downing Street and it was a mid term election a slight reverse would be understandable, but at a time when the Prime Minister and his heir apparent are at the peak of their unpopularity such a failure to advance the party’s representation is nothing short of appalling.”

While he concedes that the party did manage to remain in third place of the major parties, he added that the Conservatives in Scotland “have suffered a reverse when they could have expected to enjoy a significant advance”.

“For everyone’s benefit I suggest Annabel Goldie be convinced that standing for Presiding Officer on Wednesday is the cleanest and most satisfying outcome that she could proudly say was a result of her campaigning – and that this would then allow a new leader to step forward, amicably as a unifying force to begin the rebuilding of the new centre right party that Scotland so badly requires.”

Conservative Home yesterday repeated calls for the Tories North of the border to split from the Conservative party in England.
