Petition on voting fiasco attracts signatures Print E-mail
Monday, 07 May 2007

A petition protesting against failures in the voting system during last Thursday's Scottish elections has already received over 650 signatures.

The electronic petition was started late on Friday by YouScotland.com, an "online citizens' rights movement".

Alan Smart, of YouScotland, said: "The rapid response of people on the basis on near zero media publicity illustrates the level of anger.

"Irrespective of party preference, people are outraged by last week's voting scandal which disenfranchised close to 10 per cent of the voters, and has cast doubt on the entire process, its outcome, and Scotland's reputation.

"Our petition demands a genuinely independent and internationally facilitated inquiry and the immediate resignations of the UK Government Ministers responsible for this disgrace to democracy, Secretary of State for Scotland Douglas Alexander MP and Under Secretary of State David Cairns MP."

Commenting on former Labour MSP and Deputy Enterprise Minister Allan Wilson's attempt to have his own individual result in Cunningham North reviewed Smart said: "He just looks like both a bad loser and an a front man in an attempt by the Labour Party to steal back an election it not only lost, but an election one of its main campaign managers, Douglas Alexander MP, has tarnished through blatant political manipulation of the voting process in his capacity as Secretary of State for Scotland.

"Whether the Holyrood elections should be re-run is an open question, but the case for a Westminster Parliamentary by-election in Douglas Alexander's Paisley and Renfrewshire South constituency is increasingly becoming overwhelming."
