SNP scores council breakthrough Print E-mail

The SNP has secured significant victory in the Scottish local authority elections, with 363 councillors to Labour’s 348.

There are 143 Conservative councillors and 166 Liberal Democrats, with 203 councillors from other parties or independents.

The SNP has emerged as the largest party in Dundee City Council with 13 seats, has doubled its councillors in Aberdeen from 6 to 12 to overtake Labour, has increased its seats in Stirling from 1 to 7 and has seen advances in areas such as South Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire, Midlothian and East Lothian.

SNP campaign director Angus Robertson MP said: "We are seeing some spectacular advances at council level, mirroring our gains in the Scottish Parliament election.

"Not only is Labour's grip over Scottish politics being broken at a national level - the dead hand of Labour domination is also being lifted from our local communities throughout Scotland."
