Voters urged to choose a "greener, fairer Scotland" Print E-mail

The Scottish Green Party is today urging voters who want to see a “greener and fairer” Scotland to vote Green at the polls tomorrow.

Making a final appeal to voters, Shiona Baird, co-convenor, Greens, said: "As Scotland prepares to go to the polls, the need to tackle climate change has never been so urgent, and never before have the stakes been so high in a Scottish election. Only a green vote will deliver effective action on green issues.

"With the threat of bigger roads and airports instead of better public transport; with communities increasingly powerless over decision-making; with children and young people missing out on the good start in life they need to thrive, there has never been a greater need for a strong Green voice in Parliament.

"Only the Greens are pledging effective targets for annual carbon reductions - backed by the majority of Scots - and only the Greens have set out the measures needed to deliver the jobs and economic opportunities a low carbon Scotland would bring. The other parties' limited pledges on the climate would be entirely cancelled out by their commitments to bigger roads and airports."

Earlier this month a Friends of the Earth Scotland study examining the manifesto commitments of the main parties declared the Greens the ‘greenest’ with a score of nine out of ten, with the Liberal Democrats, Labour and SNP all scoring three out of ten, and the Tories marked zero out of ten.

As well as election commitments to tackle climate change, cut pollution, and deliver a world class public transport network in place of road and airport expansion; their manifesto also pledges to support local business and social enterprise, regulate supermarkets, keep the NHS and water public, reverse rail privatisation, say No to Trident and nuclear power, invest in renewable energy, tackle poverty, provide warm, affordable, energy efficient homes, stop demonising young people, and defend civil liberties and equality.

Baird continued: "If Scots want a better Scotland, one that is greener and fairer, built on a competitive low carbon economy and a high quality for life for all they can secure it by first voting Green tomorrow."
