Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Nicol Stephen has today challenged Scotland’s other parties to focus on improving children’s health, rather than debating Scotland’s constitutional future.

He has launched the Scottish Liberal Democrats’ Children’s Health manifesto, which includes commitments to an hour of physical activity a day for every child, free fruit for all primary children, 200 more dentists and check ups in schools and 100 local health centres across Scotland with 2,000 extra nurses.

Stephen said: “People across Scotland tell me that they want the next four years to be about getting things done and making a real difference to peoples’ lives. They don’t want to spend it stuck in constitutional treacle.

“Improving the health of children in Scotland is a major challenge for the next four years. This manifesto for better children’s health will make a real difference for families and young people across Scotland.

“Everyone knows that tackling childhood obesity is a big challenge. Only the Scottish Liberal Democrats are ambitious enough to take real action. We want an hour a day of physical activity for every child with 1,000 extra PE teachers and sports coaches to make it happen.

“I want every primary child to receive free fruit in school. We will continue to improve school meals, investing an extra £7.5m to provide healthy, local food. I want to see all children learn about cooking and preparing food for healthy living.

“Only the Scottish Liberal Democrats will help families get healthcare on their doorstep, with 100 new local health centres and 2,000 extra nurses to staff them.

“These are the Scottish Liberal Democrat priorities. We want to improve children’s health and deliver a brighter, healthier future for Scotland.”
