Scottish leaders share songs that remind them of home Print E-mail

Scotland’s party leaders have shared what songs remind them of home, as part of Shelter Scotland’s Hometime Songs campaign.

First Minister Alex Salmond’s chose "Caledonia" by Dougie Maclean, which he described as, “The complete modern anthem of home and homecoming".

Labour leader in the Scottish Parliament Iain Gray, a Leither, chose “Sunshine on Leith,” by the Proclaimers, while Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie chose “Bobby Shaftoe,” as she says her mother used to sing it to her when she was a little girl.

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott's chose the “Norseman’s Home” as the song that reminds him of Shetland.

He said: "This is one of the songs sung at the Up Helly Aa fire festival held in Lerwick on the last Tuesday of every January and at the smaller versions of the festival held elsewhere around Shetland…

"It is not just that it is a stirring song about the islands' Viking heritage, but it is also a reminder of these festivals which are excellent community events involving young and old. They reflect the strong community spirit in Shetland, and in the individual communities around the islands, which makes Shetland such a great place to live."

While former Scottish Green Party leader Robin Harper chose ‘Octopusses garden’ by the Beatles, as he says it is happy and bright, just like his home.

The housing and homelessness charity will be asking more politicians to tell them what songs remind them of home at a special event to be held at the Parliament later this month.

The stunt will also see the charity hand over thousands of postcards of favourite Hometime Songs to the Scottish Government. These postcards have been collected over the summer months, via events and a special website www.hometimescotland.org.uk

Director of Shelter Scotland, Graeme Brown, said: “We’ve been delighted with the response from the public so far to this part of our Hometime Scotland campaign. Everyone knows how important having a safe and secure home is, particularly in these troubled economic times. We’re hoping that Scottish politicians come down on Wednesday, November 19, tell us their favourite songs and sign up to the campaign.”
