The Scottish Government has unveiled a programme of activities to celebrate St Andrew's Day on November 30, including the St Andrew's DO – two days of free events in Princes Street Gardens.
The SNP believes Scots should be more involved in celebrating "our national day", which will include a 'happy march' of Saltire-clad children to Princes Street Gardens, live music and theatre workshops. The 'Visit for Free' programme of access to historic buildings will again run on St Andrew's Day itself.
"St Andrew's Day is an opportunity for everyone at home, and our friends around the world, to celebrate Scotland – from our rich heritage to our vibrant modern culture," Culture Minister Linda Fabiani said at the launch.
"In addition to all the wonderful events scheduled in Scotland, many of the millions of affinity Scots all over the world will be celebrating St Andrew's Day, from the St Andrew's Society of Toronto to the Scottish Australian Heritage Society in Sydney – this is a great platform in the run up to Homecoming next year."
She also noted the importance of promoting tourism during the current economic difficulties, particularly marketing Scotland's position "as a great year-round visitor destination".
The celebrations are being styled as an introduction to the Year of Homecoming, which runs next year from Burns' Night until St Andrew's Day.
