Devine urges shoppers to 'keep cool' this Christmas Print E-mail
Thursday, 23 October 2008

Labour MP Jim Devine has joined trade union Usdaw in urging Christmas shoppers to 'keep cool' and not take out their frustration on shop staff during the stressful festive season.

Devine joined the campaign after a Usdaw survey showed that up to two-thirds of shop staff were abused in the last year, while almost ten per cent were physically assaulted.

Looking to the forthcoming festive period, the Livingstone MP stated: "Christmas shopping can be exciting but stressful. I urge all customers not to take out their frustration on shop staff who have to work hard, often for long hours at this time when shops are at their busiest."

"Both verbal abuse and threats are unacceptable forms of anti-social behaviour and I am encouraging retailers and police in Livingston to work together to make sure that the Government’s anti-social behaviour measures are used where necessary to protect shop staff."

Usdaw general secretary John Hannett added: "Christmas can be a very stressful time, but we are calling on all customers to think twice before they abuse staff, and by staying calm they will help retailers to give them a better service."

There are now 62 shopping days until Christmas, while retailers will also be getting ready for the busy sales period that follows.
