Scotland’s health boards will share £19m to help tackle childhood obesity, Public Health Minister Shona Robison announced today.
The Scottish Government published its Healthy Eating, Action Living action plan to improve diet, increase physical activity and tackle obesity in June. It was backed by £56m, of which £40m pounds was new money. Health boards have today been allocated a share of nearly half of the resources to specifically target childhood obesity.
Speaking ahead of today’s debate on obesity in the Scottish Parliament, Robison said the Government is “determined to stop the problem of obesity in its tracks” by helping new mums and young people develop healthy lifestyle habits that will last a lifetime.
In addition to the funding she said they are also providing free fruit to mothers and pre-school children, and later this month will be expanding the Counterweight programme, which offers lifestyle and weight management advice to adults at risk of obesity.
