Possible Al-Jazeera bureau for Scotland Print E-mail
Tuesday, 26 August 2008

Prominent satellite television station Al-Jazeera has said it will consider establishing a Scottish bureau as part of its international network.

The proposal came during a meeting between Al Jazeera director general Wahah Khanfar and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today.

Based in Qatar, Al Jazeera has attracted controversy for playing messages from Al-Qaeda figures such as Osama bin Laden. It has also been praised for its ability to obtain access to individuals and areas in Iraq and Afghanistan that Western news organisations cannot reach.

Khanfar said:

“I have very much enjoyed my stay in Scotland. I’m sure many people in the Middle East would be interested in Scotland, but they currently are not aware of all the country has to offer. I extend the invitation to the First Minister and Deputy First Minister to visit us in Doha soon”.
