Glasgow is expected to gain UNESCO City of Music status later this month according to Glasgow MSP Pauline McNeill.

Glasgow Kelvin member McNeill is convener of the Scottish Parliament’s cross party group on the contemporary music industry. UNESCO will make its announcements on Glasgow’s bid at a special lunch on August 20.

McNeill said:

“UNESCO City of Music status is great news for Glasgow, we deserve to win this prestigious recognition which makes clear Glasgow’s position not just as Scotland’s music capital but as one of the world’s leading musical cities.

“With more live music venues in my constituency than probably any other part of the UK I know how important music is to Glaswegians, from rock and pop to Piping Live and Celtic Connections, Glasgow takes its music seriously and the success of our world-class orchestras such as the BBC SSO and the RSNO along with the continuing emergence of bands like Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastian and now Glasvegas, to name but a few, show the extent of Glasgow’s musical talents.”
