The Highland Council has today confirmed its new administration following an agreement last month by Independent, Liberal Democrat and Labour councillors to form a coalition.
The new administration, which replaces the former Independent/SNP partnership, is made up of 30 Independent, 20 Liberal Democrat and 7 Labour members. It follows the SNP’s decision to pull out of the one-year old administration in June, reportedly due to frustration with discipline issues amongst its coalition partners.
The 17 SNP members plus the Independent Members Group of 6 now form the Council’s Opposition.
Independent Sandy Park will head the coalition as Convenor while Liberal Democrat Michael Foxley will take up the post of Council Leader. A new position of Budget Leader and Chairman of the Budget Information Group has been created and will be filled by Liberal Democrat Councillor David Alston.
