Voting is underway in the hotly-anticipated Glasgow East by-election.
Polling stations opened at 0700 this morning and will close at 2200, with a declaration expected by 0200 on Friday.
The by-election, which was prompted by the resignation of Labour MP David Marshall on health grounds, is being contested by nine candidates. However, it is largely thought to be a two-horse race between Labour MSP Margaret Curran and the SNP councillor John Mason.
Labour currently have a majority of over 13,000 and the seat is the party’s third safest in Scotland. However, First Minister Alex Salmond, who has declared the contest a trial of strength between his government and Gordon Brown’s, has said that the SNP is on course to deliver a “political earthquake”.
