Age Concern Scotland targets political parties Print E-mail

The charity Age Concern Scotland has been meeting with Scotland’s political parties to exchange policy ideas ahead of next week’s election.
Chief executive of Age Concern David Manion met with Labour leader Jack McConnell at the launch of Scottish Labour’s mini manifesto for older people yesterday.

Age Concern’s manifesto ‘Count me in’ includes measures to target age discrimination, health, fuel poverty and council tax.

Manion said: “We are pleased that the Labour manifesto incorporates many of the proposals we have been lobbying for. Some of which were incorporated in the Executive’s document ‘All our futures-planning for a Scotland with an ageing population’. It is good that a positive view of ageing is taken, and that older people are seen not as a burden on society but as people who are increasingly demanding more from later life.”

The SNP today launched its own policy agenda for older people. Nicola Sturgeon set out the party's plans on a visit in Glasgow to meet one of the older people who signed up to an advert backing the SNP.

Speaking at the visit, she said: “I'm delighted that our plan to introduce a fair system of paying for local services, by abolishing the unfair Council Tax and replacing it with a fair system, based on the ability to pay is attracting increasing support. Older people from across the country are saying loud and clear - 'Count me in'.

Age Concern Scotland has already met with the Scottish Liberal Democrats and the SNP and is due to meet with the Scottish Greens.
