Labour has today announced its proposals for private members bills for the next parliamentary year.
The party says that the bills highlight what Jackie Baillie, the Chief of Staff to Labour leader Wendy Alexander, calls a “legislation-lite” government.
Launching the proposals, Baillie said: “We will bring forward a number of bills to showcase our priorities in contrast this SNP government which is in contrast legislation-lite.
“Unlike the Nationalists, in opposition Labour isn’t sitting back and merely carping from the sidelines. We will continue to hold the SNP to account but also present the alternative that Labour offers as indicated in our suite of bills. It is also an opportunity to implement key manifesto commitments and involve other partners in our work at Holyrood such as trades unions and the voluntary sector.”
Labour has currently proposed four bills to the Scottish Parliament covering disabled parking, microgeneration, property factors and apprenticeships.
The Disabled Parking Bill was introduced on 3 June and the Microgeneration Bill will be introduced shortly after the Parliamentary recess. A final proposal has yet to be lodged for the Property Factors Bill and the Apprenticeship Bill which completed the consultation phase on 17 June.
The party’s shadow cabinet has identified further bills to take forward on water rebates for pensioners, nursery places for vulnerable two year olds and bus regulation.
Baillie added: “These bills reflect that Labour represents core Scottish values and is the party best able to stand up for the Scottish people. Labour wants to protect, help and support the most vulnerable in society like children, disabled people. We want justice and fairness in the housing market and to improve skills and job opportunities for young people and help relieve the financial burden on our pensioners.”
