Commonwealth Bill gets Royal Assent Print E-mail
Wednesday, 11 June 2008

The 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Bill has received Royal Assent and will now become an Act of Parliament.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games Act is designed to ensure the games run as smoothly as possible.  The legislation puts measures in place to safeguard against ticket touts and ‘ambush’ marketing.  It also provides powers to address issues such as land purchase and transport.

Commenting on the legislation Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell said:

"I am delighted that the 2014 Commonwealth Games Bill, which was introduced to Parliament in November last year minutes after the fantastic news from Sri Lanka, has received Royal Assent.

"Measures are now in place to protect the Games and clamp down on activities that could undermine the integrity of the occasion.

"The 2014 Games give us the opportunity to showcase Glasgow, a modern vibrant city and Scotland, a confident, welcoming, friendly nation."
