Plans to reduce high levels of noise in Edinburgh and Glasgow have been published by the Government today.
Environment Minister Michael Russell said the plans, which follow on from noise maps published last year, would help reduce noise pollution from infrastructure like busy roads and airports and help make Scotland a greener place.
Russell said:
“As well as being deeply annoying for all concerned, excessive noise can have some serious side-effects, not least sleep deprivation. It is often referred to as the forgotten pollutant but the Scottish Government is determined to do more to highlight, and therefore deal with, the problem of excessive noise. Improving our environment is a key part of our plans for a greener Scotland.
“I don't expect to see instant solutions to the problem. However, I do see today as another step forward in a long term process. I want to look at what is feasible to reduce excessive noise and make Scotland a quieter place.”
