University introduces scholarships to attract American graduates Print E-mail
Monday, 19 May 2008

The University of Aberdeen has announced a new scholarship programme for American students.

The Scotland USA Graduate Scholarship offers three US students the chance to undertake a full time postgraduate Masters programme in the university. The one year scholarship is for £2000 and applies to US nationals only.

In a joint initiative between Scottish Universities and the British Council Scotland’s Education UK Scotland team, the scholarship programme aims to strengthen links between Scotland and the USA. This follows a steady rise in the number of American students opting to come to study in Scotland. With 2,885 American students in Scottish Higher Education Institutes in 2005/06 and 3,325 in 2006/07, the USA is now the third largest market for Scottish universities. Co-funded by the University and Education UK Scotland, the scheme is designed to attract more American students to Scotland.

Overseas students’ tuition fees are an important source of finance for Scottish universities. These students pay full fees at the market rate with an annual cost of up to about £12,000.

All of Scotland’s 17 universities are participating in the programme, each offering three scholarships and commencing this September.

Jenny Fernandes, Head of the International Office for the University of Aberdeen said:

“The introduction of the Scotland USA Graduate Scholarship is an ideal example of the way in which the university aims to encourage and support international students in their studies.

“The awards will offer vital finances to the successful candidates, alleviating some of the cost of their studies and enabling them to enjoy their educational experience in Aberdeen. As postgraduate students, the scholars who are awarded these grants will have the unique opportunity to enhance their studies whilst experiencing the exciting culture, atmosphere and range of activities which the university and the city of Aberdeen have to offer.”
