Glasgow City Council has published an online Local Income Tax calculator to allow people to work out whether they would be better or worse off if the controversial tax system were introduced.
As part of the council’s consultation on Local Income Tax it is seeking the views of the Glasgow public. Its response to the income-based tax system with which the Scottish Government is proposing to replace Council Tax, the Council says, will be based on the potential impact of the tax on individual households, on the council as a whole and on Glasgow’s economy.
In order to calculate how much Local Income Tax they will pay, people will need to know their annual council tax liability minus Scottish Water charges, minus discounts plus their total household income.
Commenting as the online calculator went live, Glasgow City Treasurer Cllr Stephen Curran said:
“This is a vitally important debate for the future of local government in Scotland. The taxes raised by councils help to pay for schools, roads, bin collections and a host of other services and yet the information from the Scottish Government on how these will be funded in the future has been limited to say the least.
“There has also been too little information on what effect this will have on households in Glasgow. Glasgow has a high number of student households who currently pay no local tax and more than ten percent of households consist of three or more adults. These are just two types of household which would be hit particularly hard but until now it has been difficult for people to get a feel for how they would be affected.
“Our online calculator makes it easy for people to see what the effect of the new tax would be on them and their family.”

Local Income Tax calculator published by Glasgow City Council Jobs in Glasgow, Unregistered Anything that will help to keep the local community's economy strong and benefit the people of Glasgow is a good thing and has got to be encouraged. An online calculator demonstrating the effects of the new tax system is a fantastic idea to let the people know exactly what will happen should the new system be introduced.
