Greens criticise timing of live weapons exercise Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 April 2008

The Scottish Greens have criticised the Ministry of Defence for allowing live fire exercises to take place at Cape Wrath near Durness during spring.

The party says that spring is a vital time for local seabirds populations as well as the lambing season, and that the MoD has previously avoided using the site during these times. Seabirds in the area likely to be affected include crested tit, shags and red throated divers.

The MoD has also been criticised for allowing the use of depleted uranium ammunition during the exercises.

Green MSP Robin Harper said:

“We have long objected to Scotland being used for target practice, but the Ministry of Defence have sunk to a new low this time. They know they should at the very least stay away in springtime to protect our seabirds and farm livestock, and live firing under these conditions is nothing less than a war on wildlife.”

Holyrood - you've got your birds muddled up, two of those species aren't seabirds. I think you just included them because they sound rude!
