Respect MP George Galloway has given Tommy Sheridan’s Solidarity Party his unequivocal support ahead of next week’s Scottish Parliament election.
The former Labour MP for Glasgow Kelvin said that Sheridan, who
barricaded Galloway’s house during the poll tax protests, had his full
backing and that Solidarity was the “most important and most credible
force on the left in Scotland”.
He said that Sheridan was the most outstanding leader of Scottish
progressive opinion and that he was the most talked about and
charismatic leader of the left in Scotland today – remarks contrasted
with his analysis of First Minister Jack McConnell:
“I was just asking Tommy because I had forgotten the name of the Mephistolean character in Austin Powers,
who I now know is Doctor Evil. If Doctor Evil is Mr Blair then Mini Me
is definitely Jack McConnell. I really, really mean Mini, Mini Me.
There has never been a smaller figure occupying a great office of power
in the whole of Scotland.”
Speaking ahead of a rally for Solidarity members, Sheridan said that
the theme of the Solidarity campaign was war – putting an end to
illegal wars, and waging war against poverty and inequality.
“Mr Brown and Mr Blair can find the resources to wage illegal wars with
a bill currently in excess of £6bn and of course they also find the
resources to commission the son of Trident – immoral, illegal weapons
of mass destruction.”
He went onto say that the forthcoming election should be a referendum
on many things. “But poverty and inequality, and Trident, have to be
primary as far as this election is concerned.”
Galloway said that although his support for Solidarity was unequivocal,
the crux of it lay with his affection for Sheridan. “Blood is thicker
than water and there is a lot of blood between Tommy Sheridan and I
going back over many great battles over decades and if I can help him I
am willing to walk from London to Scotland in order to do it.”
