Grocers call for more enforcement of alcohol legislation Print E-mail

The Scottish Grocers Federation has called for greater enforcement of legislation governing under-age drinking after the release of figures showing that many under-age children are still able to purchase alcohol from small shops.

The SGF says that it is committed to working with Government and police to stop under-age people getting access to alcohol.

John Drummond, Chief Executive of the Scottish Grocers Federation (SGF) said,

“SGF members are concerned at the negative effect underage drinking has on many of the local communities they serve.  That is why they are doing everything possible to stamp out the problem by adopting measurers such as a Challenge 25 policy for the sale of alcohol.

“In addition SGF recognises there needs to be a crack down on the trading practises of rogue retailers.  There may be bad apples in the barrel but it would be untrue and unfair to label all retailers as irresponsible. Retailers and sales staff are very aware of the serious consequences if they get it wrong and mistakenly sell alcohol to someone under the age of 18.  Can the same be said of an under 18 year old who in a premeditated act purchases alcohol using fake ID? Under age drinkers need to know there are consequences to their actions and parents need to take more responsibility for their children.”
