EU funding for Highlands and Islands projects announced Print E-mail

More than £15m in European Union funding for various projects across the Highlands and Islands has been announced today by First Minister Alex Salmond. 

The funding will distributed between 45 projects as part of the 2007-13 European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund spending round.

Projects selected for support include North Highland College, which will use its funds to assist re-skilling for those working in the oil, gas and renewables funding and the Social Enterprise Academy, which aims to help develop and equip social enterprises across the region.

Speaking on the Isle of Skye, Salmond said:

“The Scottish Government is promoting sustainable success across Scotland. The Highlands and Islands hold many of the key resources, not least the talent of the people, that can put us ahead of international competition. The challenge now is to make sure we put the Highlands and Islands in the right position to be able to fulfil its potential.

“European Structural Funds provide us with a great opportunity to increase our economic competitiveness, by supporting strategic projects that can help boost employment, tackle social exclusion, and support sustainable businesses.  The number of projects that have won funding across the Highlands and Islands is testament to the initiative and enthusiasm that the region has to offer. I hope that this injection of resources will enable these important projects to thrive.”
