A joint statement on core NHS values was agreed by health ministers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at a meeting today in Edinburgh.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon hosted the meeting with Northern Irish Minister of Health Michael McGimpsey and Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services Edwina Hart, where they discussed health issues of mutual interest.

The Ministers welcomed “the opportunity presented by their joint meeting to exchange experiences and discuss opportunities about the future direction of health and healthcare in our respective countries. This was a historic first meeting and we look forward to extending inter-governmental cooperation on healthcare in the future.”

The agreement went on to express their support for the founding principles of the NHS, and commiting themselves to working to reduce health inequalities, to promote public health and enable health improvement, to improve the quality of healthcare services and to secure best value for the taxpayers who pay for NHS services.

The agreement also highlights the importance of partnerships between the Government, the public, patients, staff and their trade unions for the effective provision of care.

“We are determined to listen and respond to the experiences, needs and aspirations of our patients as we design and deliver healthcare services. The demand for services is increasing and changing in each country and we believe that effective intergovernmental co-operation can play a significant role in shaping our responses to the challenges we face."
