Lib Dems outline plans for Scandinavian style pre-school education Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 April 2007

The Liberal Democrats have called for a Scandinavian approach to pre-school education, including a free playgroup place for all two year olds and extra nursery hours.

The party's early year proposals also include a plan for a 50 per cent increase in the free nursery place provision for three and four year olds, improvements to the facilities for early year education, and a greater use of outdoor education.

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Nicol Stephen said: “In Finland and Sweden there is far more support for families with young children. A major expansion in Scotland’s playgroups would transform the situation in Scotland. In order to deliver a free playgroup place for all two year olds we will double the number of playgroups across Scotland.

“The Scottish Pre-school Play Association is strongly supportive and has welcomed this major boost. To deliver this I want to invest an extra £55 million.

“I want to make Scotland one of the best places in the world to bring up children. If we are to give our children a bright future we have to start earlier.

Stephen added that research showed that giving children good experiences early in life made them more successful, more likely to lead a healthy life and cut the risk of crime. "This is what every parent wants for their children."
