Beauly to Denny power plans condemned at public inquiry |

An expert witness has condemned plans for the controversial Beauly to Denny power line at the ongoing public inquiry today.
Former head of Scottish National Heritage Professor Roger Crofts hit
out at the plans and claimed a lack of coherent government policy for
renewable energy.
Crofts, currently an environmental and management adviser, said: “To
date, there has been no national locational strategy for onshore wind
turbine location and the Scottish Executive has consistently refused to
provide one. The applicants for the power line claim that the
government policy is clear. But this is far from the case.
“Government is clear in supporting renewables sources for electricity
generation but is not clear on the technologies or the locations to be
used to deliver this. In addition the Minister's position in deciding
on the application is prejudiced by unambiguous statements in favour of
the upgrading of the Beauly Denny in the National Planning Framework
and in DTI documents. The reporters must disregard these statements if
there is to be a fair and transparent inquiry; otherwise the public can
only assume that the outcome is a foregone conclusion.”
The original proposal to replace the existing overhead line was
submitted by subsidiaries of Scottish and Southern Energy and Scottish
Power. In 2005 the companies published the proposed route, which will
replace the existing line between Beauly, west of Inverness, and Denny,
west of Falkirk.
Scottish Ministers announced in August 2006 that the proposed upgrade to the line would be referred to a public inquiry.
