SNP leader Alex Salmond today claimed the support of 100 Scottish business figures for the party in the upcoming May election.
The names range from household names, such as leading Scottish
entrepreneur Sir Tom Farmer, to those with businesses "from every
sector of the economy".
Speaking during a visit to Cullen Building Products in Glenrothes Salmond said:
“This is a hugely significant moment in the Scottish election campaign
– a list of 100 business supporters reflecting the entire spectrum of
the business community in Scotland, and the powerful declaration of Sir
Tom Farmer, an outstanding Scottish entrepreneur.
"The SNP are winning the debate on the Scottish economy, just as we
earning the trust of the people to win the election. These endorsements
give us real momentum as we enter the final stages of this campaign.
The SNP are moving forward, while Labour are stuck in a disastrous,
negative campaign.”
Farmer spoke out about his support for the SNP. "I do not accept the
scare stories being spread of fire and flood if we decide to stand up
for ourselves. As polls show, around 80 per cent want changes at
Holyrood through a combination of more powers to the Parliament or
independence. There is no sense of responsibility under the current
set up. Right now Scotland has a management team – what we need is a
government.
"Scotland is a great country. There is a lot going right for Scotland
but that is no reason to be complacent. People throughout Scotland are
saying they are disappointed with what devolution has delivered in the
last eight years, and are realising that the scare stories are only
being put forward to deflect us from the real issues and concerns of
today."
He added that Iraq, Trident, pensions, and cash for honours were all
issues that had created "mistrust and a feeling of being let down".
However, Scottish Liberal Democrat election director, Tavish Scott, claimed that most businesses rejected the SNP agenda:
“Every survey shows the vast majority of business leaders in Scotland
reject the uncertainty of independence. The priority for Scottish
business is competing in the global market, not building up new
barriers.”
