The Scottish baby boom has increased with 57,781 births registered in 2007, an increase of 2091 on the previous year. Deaths rose by 891 to 55,984.
Registrar General for Scotland, Duncan Macniven, releasing the figures, said that cancer remained the biggest killer of Scots:
“Cancer, which accounted for 27 per cent of deaths, coronary heart disease (17 per cent) and strokes (10 per cent) remain the three biggest causes of death. The number of deaths from coronary heart disease and strokes dropped by two per cent on 2006, with almost 350 fewer people dying. On the other hand, 142 more people died from cancer, an increase of almost one per cent,”
The figures show there were 29,866 marriages - 32 fewer than in 2006 and the fifth-lowest since Victorian times. There were also 688 civil partnerships registered, well below the 1047 registered in 2006 when the legislation first came into place. Divorces also fell by 321, a fact attributed to a sharp rise seen last year when regulations governing consent in divorce were changed.
