Institute of Directors awards announced Print E-mail

Moir Lockhead, chief executive of Firstgroup, was named as the Institute of Directors' Director of the Year for 2007 at an awards ceremony held in Glasgow last night.

Martin Gilbert, chief executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, took home the IoD Scotland's Chairman’s Award for his lifelong contribution to the profession of directorship.

John McClelland, chair of the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council, was named Non-Executive Director of the Year

Roger McClure, the Funding Council’s chief executive, said: "The whole Council and its staff are delighted to congratulate our chair on winning this prestigious award.  We are all proud of his achievement." 

Willie Docherty, managing director of City Building in Glasgow won the Public Sector Director of the Year prize, and Graham Bell, chief executive of the Kibble Education and Care Centre, won the Voluntary Sector Director of the Year award.

Led by IoD Scotland, the awards were also backed by Clydesdale Bank, Determined to Succeed, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Lexus, Microsoft, MCL, Napier University, Scottish Enterprise, SCVO and the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

IoD Scotland executive director David Watt toasted the evening's winners: "The Director of the Year Awards has quickly become an established date in Scotland corporate calendar as it acknowledges the outstanding contribution of many of our business leaders.

"The calibre of entries we received this year was extremely high, making it a fierce competition... I think that the quality and wealth of experience demonstrated by our talented award winners should give some encouragement to the next generation of aspiring entrepreneurs. Scotland desperately needs more people like this - individuals who are going to make us more globally competitive."
