Lib Dems highlight Chinese record in Sudan Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 February 2008

The Liberal Democrats have welcomed Hollywood director Steven Spielberg’s decision to quit his role as an artistic advisor to the Beijing Olympics in protest at China’s record in the Sudan.

China has extensive links with the Sudanese regime that has been accused of fomenting violence in the Darfur region that has seen hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions forced into refugee camps.

Lib Dem shadow Foreign Secretary Ed Davey MP contrasted Spielberg’s stance with Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s lack of emphasis on human rights on his recent Chinese trip.

Davey said:

“Steven Spielberg is right to criticise China’s record in Sudan, and that criticism should extend to any country or company that in any way supports the Sudanese government. The British Government should be doing far more to encourage disinvestment in companies and financial institutions active in Sudan, wherever they come from. Gordon Brown’s silence on human rights and Darfur during his recent Chinese trip stands in sharp contrast to his hand wringing over Darfur when back in Britain.”
