A majority of Scottish voters feel that judges should be able to decide sentences without outside influence. Responding to the question “are too many people sent to prison in Scotland”, 62 per cent of respondents said no, because judges should always decide the appropriate punishment without outside influence. The remaining 38 per cent of voters felt that there were too many people sent to prison, as incarceration gets in the way of rehabilitation.
