Liberal Democrats launch families manifesto Print E-mail

A free playgroup place for every two year old, maximum class sizes of 25 in primary one to three and an hour of physical activity every day for every child are all key proposals in the Scottish Liberal Democrats’ ‘Manifesto for Families’, launched today by party leader Nicol Stephen.

Stephen said that at this election the Liberal Democrats are focused on ‘getting things done’, and giving children the best possible start in life.

Outlining some of their proposals he said: “The young people and parents I’ve met across Scotland tell me they want more investment in new activities and opportunities for young people. We will turn our schools into community hubs for everyone’s benefit, all day and every weekend with new exciting activities for young people and affordable childcare before and after school. We will give every young person two weeks of outdoor activity and cut the cost of leisure access for young people.

“Young people across Scotland care passionately about the environment. Parents and grandparents also care about the legacy they leave future generations. That is why we want every school to be an eco-school with on-site renewable energy, more environment education and children involved in recycling. And to improve the environment where families live, we will give greater protection to greenspace, create new parks, and invest in play parks and local regeneration.

“Improving children’s health is an important issue for many families. That is why we will improve school meals with more local healthy food and give free fruit to every primary child. We will increase access to local health with 100 new local health centres, more school nurses and 200 extra dentists so everyone has access to an NHS dentist.

He also argued that families would benefit from their proposals to scrap the current council tax system and replace it with a local income tax. He explained: “Hard working families across Scotland will benefit from our plans to scrap the unfair council tax and replace it with a fairer local income tax based on ability to pay. An average family living in a Band D home would save £439 per year. And families struggling to afford their own home will benefit from increased investment in affordable housing.

“These are just some of the priorities detailed in our Manifesto for Families. Only the Liberal Democrats have set out our vision for a bright future for families. We are committed to making life easier for families across Scotland.”
