Financial sector must do more to tackle climate change |

Finance and Sustainable Growth Secretary John Swinney has called on the banking and financial services sector to contribute more to the fight against climate change.
Speaking at a meeting hosted by the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland this morning, Swinney said:
“Unchecked climate change is one of the most serious threats facing us today. It is not just an environmental challenge. Climate change threatens people, our economies and our societies. It is a challenge that transcends all traditional boundaries. This is a truly global issue. It can only be tackled if all sectors of society work together. This meeting comes at a key time as I will formally launch our consultation on the Scottish Climate Change Bill later today.
“I welcome this meeting as an opportunity to set out the challenge of climate change that affects us all, and to explore with representatives of the financial services industry how we can work together to tackle this.”
Simon Thompson, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland, added:
“Scottish bankers have a worldwide reputation for innovation and professionalism, and are applying these qualities here in Scotland and around the world to help society tackle climate change. The Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland is delighted to work with the Scottish Government to consider initiatives that will make a difference here in Scotland, by improving the energy efficiency of the housing stock, which in turn will help us achieve the target of an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050 as set out in the Scottish Climate Change Bill consultation.”

Ray Khan, Unregistered The comments by Simon Thompson are encouraging, however he seems to overlooked the large part to be played by Scottish industry. By improving the energy efficiency of our commercial and retail premises we can have a large effect on climate change. We must all do our bit and at the same time it is possible to make energy reductions that reflect as overheads reductions for busineses in Scotland.
