Scotland's top police chief has ordered all his officers to get back on the beat. New Strathclyde chief constable Steve House wants every deskbound officer to spend at least 12 days on the street each year.
Thousands of Scots face a booze drought as huge hikes in licence fees force village off-sales to close. Smaller shopkeepers claim they cannot afford to pay the crippling price hike from £86 to £1240 imposed by Holyrood last week.
