The Public and Commercial Services Union is today launching the biggest interactive political lobbying exercise ever undertaken by a trade union, its general secretary told the STUC Congress today.
The Make Your Vote Count campaign is aimed at getting candidates from
across the political spectrum to support the union's causes. The PCS
Scotland website has already uploaded listings of 700 political
candidates who have been asked for their views on civil service job
cuts, privatisation and pay.
The union’s 35,000 Scottish members are being directed to use the
website to further lobby candidates on a constituency by constituency
basis on local office closures, poor conditions and low pay.
Serwotka said: “Our demands are entirely reasonable and achievable and
each day we are building political support for our campaign. As each
day passes the situation worsens - jobs are lost, offices closed and
services deteriorate resulting in eroding working conditions and
pressures on staff, poorer services to the public and an increase in
violent attacks on our members."
"To make matters worse, PCS members also face cuts in their living
standards with pay offers significantly below the rate of inflation.
Pay guidance caps basic pay increases at 2 per cent, whilst the rest of
the economy enjoy rises in line with inflation is an insult to civil
and public servants whose starting salaries can be just above the
minimum wage."
Meanwhile, the union is preparing for its third UK-wide one day strike
on 1 May, against 100,000 civil service job cuts, eroding conditions
and pay cuts.
