The Hungry for Success healthy eating programme has been a hit in primaries but has failed to make so much of a mark on secondary schools, according to school inspectors.

HMIE has published a progress report on the Hungry for Success initiative, which indicates that progress in secondary schools has been slow, partly owing to the influence of teenage culture and peer and commercial pressures.

The fact that secondary school pupils can go outside school grounds during lunch was also blamed, leading some to call for "lunch lockdowns". The HMIE report also said that there was a lack of priority and urgency in terms of implementing Hungry for Success in secondary schools.

The good news was that Hungry for Success had taken root more firmly in primaries, which continued to make good progress in achieving improvements and establishing healthy eating firmly within the context of heath promotion.

Across Scottish schools, HMIE said that there were notable improvements in the quality of school meals, with improvements in the nutritional quality of meals accompanied by greater encouragement and opportunity to eat healthily.
