Holyrood committee calls for evidence on rural housing Print E-mail
Friday, 11 January 2008

The Scottish Parliament's Rural Affairs and Environment Committee has launched an inquiry into rural housing, looking at why housing in certain rural areas is beyond the financial reach of those who need it most.

Committee members will examine a range of other complex and variable factors around the provision of rural housing. They will seek to identify the challenges in different parts of the country to people accessing appropriate and affordable housing in rural areas.  They will also assess the effectiveness of existing initiatives for meeting these challenges and identify possible further initiatives for implementation.

Committee convener Roseanna Cunningham said:"The better supply of affordable housing is a major issue for rural areas. In launching this inquiry my Committee seeks to find real solutions to many of the barriers to rural housing provision.

"We are keen to hear from people from rural areas across the length and breadth of Scotland to understand where key problems lie.

"We are also particularly interested in hearing about successful initiatives which have overcome some of the problems associated with addressing housing needs in rural areas."

The closing date for the consultation is 4 April 2008.
