Cereal production figures published Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 January 2008

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead today welcomed a "relatively strong" estimate for 2007's cereal and oilseed rape harvest.

The final estimate of cereal production for the 2007 harvest is 33,000 tonnes lower than the provisional estimate published on 11 October 2007, mainly as a result of lower barley yields reported in the Cereal Production Survey compared with the initial estimates.

"I recognise that this was a difficult year for many farmers with adverse weather conditions, foot and mouth, blue tongue and increasing costs," Lochhead said.

"I look forward to the next year's harvest figures, where we will be looking for production levels to remain robust - especially now that set-aside land can be used for production."

Compared with the 2006 harvest total cereal production decreased by 46,000 tonnes or 1.7 per cent.

Barley production decreased by 1.2 per cent, wheat production by 1.5 per cent and oat production by 9 per cent, but oilseed rape production increased by 12 per cent.
