Amnesty International has welcomed the release of Scot Kenny Richey from death row in the US.
Amnesty played a key role in having Richey’s case re-heard by the authorities in Ohio, and spent several years lobbying the UK Government to maintain the pressure on American authorities to ensure Richey received justice.
Richey was convicted of arson and murder in 1987 and sentenced to death, but always protested his innocence. He won an appeal against his capital conviction last year and yesterday entered a ‘no-contest’ plea to reduced charges which saw him released after over 21 years in prison.
Amnesty International’s Scottish Programme Director John Watson said:
“It’s an incredible moment: Kenny is now a free man after spending more than two decades on death row. He’s suffered from shoddy justice in the United States but now at least he’s on his way home. We wish him all the best as he adjusts to life as a free man.”
