Scottish Labour should back the SNP’s plan to freeze council tax levels after a poll revealed that 70 per cent of Labour voters approve of the scheme, says Nationalist MSP Kenny Gibson.
The poll was conducted by YouGov and commissioned by the SNP.
Gibson, who is deputy convener of the Local Government Committee, said Labour needed to recognise that voters wanted council tax levels to remain low.
He said:
“Labour must be honest with the voters – do they back the freeze or do they want to see another increase? 70 per cent of Labour voters clearly back the SNP Government's decision to support a council tax freeze and councils across the country have welcomed the new deal with Government. It is time Labour in Parliament told us where they stand.
“The SNP Government has reversed the decline in local authority finances, allowed local authorities to keep their efficiency savings for the first time and is working in partnership with local authorities to meet specific outcomes for Scotland. All we have heard from Labour is negative scaremongering. Voters have the right to know. It's time Wendy Alexander came out of hiding and made her position clear.”
