Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond has called on Prime Minister Tony Blair to apologise for taking the UK into the war in Iraq on what he describes as “false pretences” during his visit to Scotland.

Salmond said that the dossier that Blair presented to the House of Commons on September 24 contained questionable intelligence that had been doctored and that Blair had said on Newsnight on February 6 2003 that he would only take action on Iraq if there had been an “unreasonable veto” at the UN.

Calling for a direct apology from Blair, Salmond said:

“Four years on from this illegal and unnecessary war, it is clear that the quagmire in Iraq will be Tony Blair’s legacy. The death toll continues to mount – both our own troops and Iraqi civilians. A Red Cross report this week concluded that the situation for ordinary Iraqis is getting steadily worse.

“The evidence is overwhelming that the Prime Minister knowingly took us to war on a false pretence, with all of the disastrous consequences that have followed. If a Prime Minister can lie about the reasons for war, he cannot be trusted to tell the truth about anything else. This is one of Tony Blair’s last visits to Scotland while still in office, and he should take the opportunity to apologise for the war in Iraq. After all of the carnage and chaos, the least he can do is say sorry, which would help to draw a line under this bleak chapter.”
