Nationalists attack Farepak delay |

The Brown Government should take immediate action to assist Farepak savers who are unlikely to receive any compensation for losses incurred when the savings scheme collapsed before Christmas last year, according to SNP MP Pete Wishart.
Wishart said that if the Government was willing to spend billions of pounds bailing out Northern Rock, low income earners who lost money in last year’s Farepak collapse should also be given assistance.
“One year on and not one penny has been returned to Farepak victims, and we are still no closer to securing justice for those caught up in this tragedy. Now we learn that not all Farepak victims will even secure the miserly five pence in the pound that was anticipated, nor is there any date for when this paltry sum will be handed over.
“It will be of cold comfort to Farepak victims that the Government has spent £1m on an education campaign. It’s not education campaigns that’s required, what is needed is for the Westminster Government to put their hands in their pockets and put together a proper package of financial assistance. Billions of pounds of tax payers money has gone into propping up Northern Rock, yet not one penny has gone to help vulnerable Farepak families who face their second Christmas cash crisis. Enough is enough, and the Westminster Government must take real action to help the Farepak victims. It was a failure of regulation that led to this scandal and Gordon Brown’s Government has a clear obligation to help these hard pressed families,” he said.
